Editing techniques
Mask transition
Track the object which you want to mask frame by frame using the free draw bezier, after each frame press the arrow positioned in the effect controls to advance the clip forward by one frame, continue this process until the whole clip has been masked away and the next clip is underneath. Some options can be altered after the edit is complete, increasing the feather makes the line seem smoother and more natural. I got the inspiration for this transition from Pan's labyrinth. After working out how to apply the transition to basic objects, i applied it to more complex ones such as a shoe, i may also look to do it inside a tent, so when the tent opens, the next shot follows from outside.
Colour grading
For the colour grade, i usually (depending on the shot) increase the warmth of the image as i find this much more appealing than a cooler look. Then i adjust the exposure of the shot, altering shadows and highlights where necessary, i increase the blacks slightly as this gives the shot a faded, cinematic look and is just a preference of mine.
In the colour wheel panel, i will also change the mid tones to slightly orange, and the shadows to slightly teal, this is another preference of mine as i think that it helps to make the shot seem more cinematic.
Black Bars
I also add black bars to the top and bottom of my frame, i use an adjustment layer to do this with the crop tool and i set this to 12 percent on top and bottom. The widescreen effect looks much more cinematic, and many mainstream films opt for a similar effect.
